Happy New Year screamies and welcome to another Graveyard Shift. It’s time to look ahead at the year of horror to come with the movies I’m most looking forward to!
1. Nosferatu (dir. Robert Eggers)
Yes, technically this is a 2024 film but it only released in the UK the first of January and I’m hoping to have seen it by the time I publish this! The classic gothic tale of the vampire was nearly lost media after a copyright dispute with the Stoker estate since, yes, Nosferatu is an adaptation of the Dracula novel. The modern remake features Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlock, our titular vampire, who I loved as Pennywise the dancing clown in It and the delightfully red herring in Barbarian. I think Skarsgård is so fun in horror so I’m looking forward to seeing what he does with the iconic vampiric Count. With all the history behind the story, I’m looking forward to seeing what this iteration brings to the table.
2. Final Destination: Bloodlines (dir. Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein)
Slated for a release excitingly soon, with a posthumous credit for Tony Todd, Final Destination: Bloodlines is so exciting to me. The original Final Destination was the very first horror movie I watched at the tender age of 13 and it started a lifelong love of the genre. I know nothing about what this latest installment will be about or what the starting disaster will be but I’ll be planted in that cinema seat asap when it is released.
3. Fear Street: Prom Queen (dir. Matt Palmer)
I will start with a disclaimer; I have not yet seen part three and I also did not realise Fear Street was an R. L. Stein project! I loved the Goosebumps books growing up so finding this out was very exciting to me. I adored parts one and two and fully intend to rewatch them and finish the trilogy ahead of the release of Prom Queen, watch this space! I love the story of the curse,I can’t wait to see how they move forward with this. I love how they handle the different aspects of the curse. I am very excited to see what they do with the universe moving forward.
4. Saw XI (dir. Kevin Greutert)
Oh my God, I love the Saw franchise and I am so excited that there are more movies coming out. I love how the series is just one big convoluted soap opera story, I adore it so much. I love how close the cast and crew all seem to be over the – I think – two decades they’ve been working on this project now. The new Saw movie is going to – from what I know – take place directly after Saw X which took place between Saw 1 and 2 so I think this is still going to be between 1 and 2 and it’s going to take over that story and it’s going to explore the fallout of what happened in Saw X, and what happened in Mexico. I don’t know if we’ll stay in Mexico. I don’t know if we will take the story back to the States and maybe involve our other apprentices a bit more, but it’s very exciting to me and I can’t wait to see how this story progresses. I will be sat firmly watching in September when it releases.
5. Until Dawn (dir. David F. Sandberg)
The Until Dawn movie is something I only found out about really recently when I wanted to check something about the game, and I found out there is actually a movie coming out this year or at least is slated to come out this year. I absolutely love the game I played through it really recently and I watched play through videos of the game when it came out. I did see people were theorizing if the movie would follow Sam and her friends from the game but it looks like the movie is gonna follow a different group of friends in the same situation, but it is going to feature Dr Hill from the game. I’m not sure if they’ll be on the same mountain or if it’s just within the same universe and they’re facing the same problem but in a different location, but I am very excited for this movie.
6. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (dir. Emma Tammi)
Is it cringey? Yes. Do I love it? Yes! I have loved the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise since the original game came out and it went super viral. The first movie was in development hell for the longest time, but the second I found out Matthew Lillard was attached to the project I was so excited! I’m a big fan of both Scream and Scooby Doo so this was very exciting for me. The first movie was very much for the fans and I loved it. Was the story convoluted or contrived? Probably, but it’s really exciting for someone who knows the intricacies of the lore to see all these little Easter eggs, including references to the pixel art mini games and the save them mini game. I’m really looking forward to seeing where this version of the story takes us and to spend another night at Freddy’s.
That’s my list, what are your most anticipated movies of this year? Let me know! Catch you next time, spookies.
